School's out

The end of the school year is always a bit emotional, but the main emotion is usually tired.  My Girl had an amazing time on the class trip to Genova and Cinque Terre and the choir trip to perform in Venice.  I didn't go so I don't have photos, but I heard some of the stories.  It sounded like a lot of fun including hiking in the rain, eating foccacia in the piazza, and singing in a Baroque church.

She was also in the middle school play as one of the "Wonder twins" of Greek mythology, Castor, the back side of the Trojan horse, and part of the Millennium Falcon.  One of her best friends was Pollox, the other twin.  The play was a combination of the Super Friends, from the 1970s cartoons, and Greek mythology, titled the Greek Mythology Olypiaganza.  It was fun and funny and great for this group of kids.  She also helped back stage with the 5th grade play.

Curtain call!

This spring she was given an award for theater and one of two profile of a graduate scholarships.  She wasn't sure if she wanted to apply for the scholarship because it was an involved process, but I'm glad she did, whether she won or not.  It was good to follow through with writing the essay, prepping for the interview, and getting recommendations from peers and teachers.

This was one of the milestone years, as they say at school, with My Girl moving up from middle school to high school.  There was a nice promotion ceremony for the 8th graders.  We will be here for one more year and for her is isn't really much of a change.  It will be the same campus.  She already has classes that meet in the HS building and most of her friends are staying.  The big changes that she is looking forward to are more options for sports and the school dances.  In HS there are separate teams for the boys and girls.  The co-ed soccer practices in middle school were frustrating.  She loved soccer when there were enough participants for an all-girl team, but working with the boys at that age and dealing with some of their comments was annoying to say the least.  Most of the kids go to the school dances with groups of friends, not dates, so she and her friends are already making plans to go together.

My Boy wrapped up his junior year with a trip to Basel Switzerland for the history bee and bowl.  It is so strange to think that he really has only one more year at home with us before he is off doing other things.  It's a year away, but I miss him already.
